If giving up meat isn't a big deal to you, consider that you might have to in order to maintain this relationship. Also consider that someone who demands that you change your entire diet to make them happy is probably not going to have a problem demanding that you change other things about yourself that they don't agree with (what kind of things you like to do in your spare time, what kind of career you want to pursue, whether or not you're religious/how you exercise your faith, who you hang out with, political beliefs, etc.).
I think the issue is that her family is toxic and also, academia is toxic. Both work on putting people down and making them insecure and that they have to work extra hard to get somewhere, which explains why she has achieved so much but still feels insecure. It's like it's never enough. I hope therapy helps her.

1) hire a PI to find out more details & the depth of this “affair” – If your family has wealth then it will be a big issue if he has any kids with her/promised her something as 2 decades is almost a “family” version.
