You need to be honest with your girlfriend. Being drunk is not a get out of jail free card. Don't make excuses, don't try to justify it, tell her honestly what happened and apologise. How your girlfriend decides to move forward is her decision and you need to respect it.
Telling her over the phone is pretty weak, but it's probably better than making her drive all that way out to the scene of the crime to tell her. It also allows her to have some space immediately and not potentially drive home upset.
