I’m sorry but I’ve seen first hand and on Reddit situations where men and women support their partners through school paying everything and many times, when that person graduates law school or their masters, they’re gone. If you’re best friends with someone for over a decade starting to fuck her family members complicates their relationship. If they (op and step bro) started dating and things went south it would put the BFF in the middle of all their issues. “Don’t fuck my siblings” is a very common boundary in friendships because of this.

If you feel the need to pay your respects it may be best to remain in the background at the funeral if you go at all. Do NOT interact with your ex or her family through anything other than the flowers/condolence card/book of condolence.
