While that is an awful way for him to react, it's not indicative of his intention. Either he is an idiot or he is acting maliciously here and doesn't actually care about you. I think talking to him and explaining to him why that question hurt you and how you want him to be supportive of you is what you should do here. He might not realize how awful he is being. He might also just be an asshole and will continue with being like this.
I imagine that you know him better, but I don't and can't make a judgement call here as to why he reacted how he did.

Don't be so sure – this guy is a serial cheater and knows how to keep his trail clear, and they work together and can talk in person, no need for messages.

When you have never spent time with someone in person, it’s easy to believe that you’re more compatible than you are. I’m not saying never meet people live but take any connection you feel with many grains of salt.
